To drive from Cancun to Playa del Carmen would take about 40 minutes.
I know you can get a bus or the colletivo (a mini van that is kind of like a shared taxi that picks you up and drops you off at the side of the highway) from Playa del Carmen to Cancun so it must run in the other direction as well. Buses are generally very nice and cheap in Mexico. I would expect that it would be less than $10 but I can't say for sure.
Personaly I do think Playa del Carmen is nicer than Cancun but it depends on what you are looking for. Cancun has slightly better beaches and a ton of shopping, it's very built up with high rise hotels, night clubs, shopping malls etc. Playa del Carmen has grown significantly but is much less built up than Cancun and you still have a sence of being in Mexico.
The joke around Cancun is "What's the difference between Miami and Cancun? - In Cancun they speak English." Truthfully, it's easier to find Mexican food in Toronto than in Cancun. Cancun is all McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Subway etc. while PDC has a McDonalds most bars and restaurants are Mexican.
Cancun is the place to go if your into night clubbing and shopping but Playa del Carmen is the place to go if you want to relax and enjoy Mexico.
PDC still has a lot of shopping too but Cancun has a ton.
So for me, it's Playa del Carmen, if I was 20 then it would be Cancun.

you can get a bus Cancun to play about an hr.bus runs both way all day playa is nice you may want go to tulum if you start early the ruins are at tulum only 15 mi. playa. don't pay for tour you dont need it. player is much smaller and easy to get around i stayed out of Cancun

I have never seen distilled water anywhere in Mexico, Not to say it is not there, justI have not seen it in 38 years so it must be behind the counter. If you seriously prefer it , it is called "Agua Destilada". My guess is ti $3.00usd for 500mil.Another guess s that the producers have 2% market share. It is far to an expensive proposition and the competition woul eat them alive. The 18 liter (Garrafon) or as I call them Boteones are still around $2 usd and the impurities are removed through several less expensive processes like Ultra violet and charcoal filtering. Cancun has a water treatment plant and the tapwater is as safe as tap water in the U.S.A and Canada. Mexico spent 16 million usd on a new water treatment plant called "Norponiente" in 2005 to service the region.
