America has been a very successful country, so I think it's hard to say they'd be better off had their history been so radically different. There was a book a few years ago by Jonathan Freedland saying Britain would be better off had the American revolution happened here instead. As a result of 300 years of internal stability, Britain is now less democratic than most other western democracies.

That said, America has a vast gulf between rich and poor, and some European-style welfare programmes, particularly in health care, would probably serve it well. Had the 13 colonies not rebelled America would be more like Canada today and would have some such programmes.

Most likely Briton would not be as it is today if the revolution had not happened. It is impossible to know if it would have been good to stay with Briton. All indications tell us that it had to be for the survival of the people and the nation. Briton was involved in many wars around the time of the revolution of the colonies in north America. It was not just the revolution that set the USA free from Briton. The war of 1812 put the lid on it. Until then it was not completely free of the king of England. At that time the main control of the British empire was the church of England and that is the main reason the USA separated church and state. The church of England still has too much power over the government. Take a good look at their welfare system and you will se it is failing and fast.

History is written by the victors for their own justification. I believe that America could have been better being in the British Commonwealth, but the various institutions have made them have a different level of stability. Being in the commonwealth would give them a more stable head of state though with continuity.

Well, I'd say the time during the actual revolution was pretty tough, but in the end, the tax practices of the British would have run the economy of America into the ground.

Now we just get to do that to ourselves. Isn't that better?

No because Britain was ruled by a dynasty of witches and it was destroyed with the American Revolution, and that's why the world is so screwed up today.
