In 1980, the Food and Drug Administration published recommendations that advised pregnant women to avoid or limit consumption of foods and drugs that contained caffeine. The advice stemmed from a study in which pregnant rats were exposed to caffeine and various teratogenic effects, resorption of fetuses, and a reduction in fetal and placental weight occurred. However, subsequent studies have not identified an association between congenital malformations and maternal caffeine consumption in humans. Also, rodents are generally more susceptible to teratogenic influences than humans; differences exist between rodents and humans regarding caffeine metabolism, and the doses used in the rat study were excessively higher than normal human consumption. A 60-kg human would have to consume approximately 50 to 70 cups of coffee daily to achieve the equivalent dose used in the study.

I even have caffeine, I have one cup of half decaf, half caf. I can't sleep very well during pregnancy and need the caffeine desperately. You are actually allowed to have 2 caffeinated cups a day, but I would assume those are 4 oz. cups, so a small coffee from Starbucks is probably more than that.
Oh yea, if you do have any caffeine have double the amount of water to follow to make up for any dehydration that caffeine may cause.

If you are trying to stay away from ALL caffeine then decaf does have a small amount of caffeine...much less than regular, but they can't get every last bit of caffeine out of it.

Depending on who you talk to a little caffeine is OK. I don't drink caffeinated drinks normally so when I'm pregnant I try to eliminate even chocolate (a small amount of caffeine). Just because my body isn't used to having much caffeine.

Drinking 1-2 cups of regular coffee a day will NOT HURT your baby. Just don't be guzzling down a whole pot each morning! I drink the equivilant of 2 cups then I switch to decaf ... or If I want to stretch it out I will do half regular & half decaf ... that way if you enjoy the taste you can a few more cups! Take it easy on the sugar though!

Sure it is. Anything in small amounts is ok. My doc said 1 caffeine drink a day when pregnant. Decaf still has caffeine, just no where near as much.

Decaf is okay and some caffeine in moderation is okay I switched to all decaf sodas for the occasional soda craving and I allow myself to drink coffee on the nights that I work I just switched to half caff/half decaf which I think is made by Folgers? My dr. said that is just fine.

Decaf. coffee is fine daily, if you choose. My ob told me that caffeinated drinks are fine during pregnancy *in moderation*. (i.e., one cup of regular coffee or one can of soda per day, followed by extra water to make up for the diuretic properties of the caffeine).

You can drink all the decaf you want though. It's 99% caffeine free, and that tiny bit of caffeine that's still in it is nothing. It would take pots and pots and pots of decaf to equal one cup of regular. :)

Caffeine is fine in moderation. With my third baby I drank a cup of regular coffee in the morning and had a regular pop in the afternoon. I needed some caffeine to keep me alert for my other two kids.
Personally I tried to stay away from artificial sweeteners as well such as the diet pops and such.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

Decaf coffee is always ok. As long as you stay under 400mg (FDA) to 200mg (most doctors say) a day, you are pretty safe. FYI-1 cup of caffeinated coffee contains about 140mg of caffeine and 1 soda contains about 55mg.
