All the answers I read above seemed to be incomplete. The answer to your question depends upon what kind of tech support position you wish to obtain.

To be a good tech support person you will need in depth knowledge of the equipment you are supporting and how software and hardware of various types interact with that equipment. Any less knowledge and you will be almost worthless in that position.(AND YES, This is a basic requirement.)

An excellent tech support person knows the equipment how other hardware and software interacts with it and also knows the settings to change to get the desired results from the equipment.

To do well on any type of application for such a position you should investigate the company you are trying to work for and learn as much as you can about the equipment they support. Investigate them just as if you were needing the knowledge for your own personal equipment repair/support.

If you can fix your own PC and explain to others how you did it you can be a success at tech support. Needless to say communication skills are a basic for a tech support position.

Tough tech support requires basic computer knowledge in hardware/software/networking. But the technical round will be held if you are able to other previous round if check for communication skills and soft skill.

So also get prepared for written test which mostly includes analytical and english test. Then when you clear these arounds maybe 3 u tech round will come where you have prove your technical knowledge.
