Recently had to format and reinstall the whole system due to viruses. Now have good anti-virus software but no fire wall. Help!

Firewall are simple to install just download a firewall and double click the setup to install it.
Now, there are number of firewall and windows XP has its own firewall. But I prefer not to use windows firewall since its not that secure.
There is one firewall on microsoft website which include detection for spies and adware but until you are using original , genuine copy of windows don't download and use it.
Other firewall option are like zone alarm from zonelabs , sygate, norton firewall.
The best is firewall is zone alarm which I'm using.

Don't use Windows Defender unless u have a genuine Windows XP Operating system.
Use Zone Alarm, which is not only free of cost but better firewall. You'll get it at download.com or http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp Configur it properly or u may lock urself out of net. Allow programs u trust in your trusted program list. Download the setup and install it. You'll find tips of using ZoneAlarm in download.com undet "How to" section.
( If your O.S is Windows XP, it has a built in Firewall, which is useless)

If you are using windows XP, then go to microsoft's site and download "windows defender" for free. It is a firewall+antispy+software explorer.

go to http://www.majorgeeks.com and click on "firewall" on the list on the left, then download a firewall, i use sygate firewall, it's working pretty good.
