I would be damn fine at the job, I know it, my friends know it. How can I get started in this? I need to know where to get my foot in, as I keep getting rebuffed for not having experience.

Plan a party.

Ok, I know that sounds obvious but if you don't have the experience in this field you can certainly make some (and get your name out there at the same time.)

So, start shopping around to venues and introducing yourself as a party planner, get information about what THEY will offer you, their prices and why you should refer your clients to them. Do the same thing with catering companies, stationary/printing etc.

You tell all these people that you ARE throwing a party and your clients will need these services so you are doing research first. Business is business. You will find some will bend over backwards for you and others don't need your business and will act like it.

Once you find the best ones you want to work with draw up a budget for the party and take it back to the vendors. Get them to work within your budget and VOILA! (at this point they may need you to provide an exact date for the event so be ready with one that you're comfortable with for your launch party)

Now sell tickets to cover your costs. Provide tickets for all the vendors to sell as well since their services/goods will be on display for your guests. Don't forget really excellent entertainment because that will be the first thing people look for and that is what will keep them happy!

Good luck to you.

You have to start off by doing a party for a friend or a relative, then pass some business cards out at the party and tell everyone to put the word out about how great your party was. Then eventually you will build up a business. Then once you have experience you could start your own party planning business or join another company.

thats what i wanna go into aswell party planning. at the moment i'm doing a degree in events management. but my advice to u would be to go out and just do it. it's a sort of job that u need to do rather then to learn. it's best to start ur own business in it rather then trying to get into a company as they will want experience. i'm forever organising parties for friends and family. so start of with people u know and hopefully it will spread. u can also leave a few of ur business cards on the table. there are many books out telling you how to become a party planner which could be helpful, i think amazon have quite a good range.
all in all have fun
Good luck in your venture.

Honestly? The best way to learn what you need is to work for a caterer for a while. If, on the other hand, you want to just jump in with both feet, make sure whatever friend has a party next uses you, then make sure the woird of mouth references get you the next few jobs. The rest is history.

Plan parties for friends, wedding receptions etc, keep journals of what you did, contacts, costs, ideas, and film the events (or at least take photos. Get guests to say what a good time they had. Then take that lot to a party planning company.

Get yourself noticed and just do it for free initially. Take on someone's party and work for free. Then maybe move on to weddings or christenings. Make a name for yourself and take photos and get clients to write recommendations. That's worth doing the work for nothing. Good luck to you :0)
