If you have MS Antispyware installed it might interfere with installs/ software removals, and I would advise temporarily suspending it while you do controlled upgrades and uni-installs.

Generally AntiSpyware lets the package thin its installing, but inhibits the creation of registry keys and configs etc which means the package fails when you try and run it. Works the same for uninstalls.

Also ensure that you are uni-installing from Control Panel, add/remove programs.
