Does anyone know if this is legal? If she doesn't cooperate, what chances do I have of getting anything done until it becomes a mandate in Maryland after 2 years of living apart. I paid $2,150 in retainer fees and I'm having doubt whether it's even worth pursuing. I have never heard of a counsel not speaking to another counsel on a case. I'm beginning to think my lawyer is inadequate. It's not out of the question for me to fire her and get another who's got better people skills. It's only her 1st attempt to communicate, but that's pretty strange that the other lawyer won't talk to her. They know each other and have worked together on cases. What do you think? Am I being too harsh?

Attorney's can't pick and choose who they communicate with when it comes to client's cases. Be patient because your husband's attorney may be playing mind games with you to get you frustrated and impatient so you will make decisions not necessarily in your favor. Point blank ask your attorney if there is any reason for concern on your part and explain that you will expect a refund of your retainer fees if they can't work your case.

Lawyers seem to play tactical games with your time and money I have been through this and I did stop legal representation and went direct to the local court to file my own papers and represent myself - it took alot of running around but this did save me thousands of dollars (with the help of Womens Legal Service viewing my documents before filing in the court - Free service to women in Australia). Not sure what it is like in Maryland but check it out - let your fingers do the walking through the telephone book.

And I also made a complaint to the Legal Association of Australia about the other parties lawyer improperly withholding information and they investegated the matter also. Lawyers in Australia have an obligation to reply to any correspondence within 2 weeks - it didn't look good in court for them.

Don't pay anymore to the Lawyers go check out the courts - ask for the documents - try filling them out and seek community legal advice, one that can help you without charging thousands also write to your x husbands lawyer explaining you are now representing yourself and serve him with the court orders - you watch him jump.

I know it is very stressful time but it is worth it - don't give up till you get what you want.

Hope this helps
GOOD LUCK

After dishing out that type of money I'd be on the phone demanding to know just what the hell the problem is here. What? What? People are afraid to talk to one another? Screw that, either the job gets done or I'll find myself another attorney that has some balls because I want action and I am not playing games.

Report them both to the Bar Association in your state. They will both have their licenses lifted or restricted and have to go back to law school. They are required to follow stringent guidelines in the practice of law.
