A paradigm is a way of looking at things and the general collective view of scientists is rather materialistic. However there is not really a single paradigm as there are many dissenting views amoung scientists. This is one of the advantages of science. Science is generally meant to be practiced with detachment.

Pros:
Open mind (theoretically) should mean more tollerance of different views. Able to think about things and learn from experience.

Cons:
Lack of sufficient care about consequences. Examples are mistreatment of animals in research, making of bombs and other instruments of war and developiing egotism.

However it is a fact that the scientific method is not practiced by most scientists, because they just crammed in all the past learning to pass exams and didn't have time to really think about it as was done in the past when there was less to learn.
