I understand the need to nurture effective relationships in the workplace. Whenever I have the time, I like to talk and be friendly but lately, work has reached a feverish pace. Sometimes I get interrupted at the most inopportune moments by my colleagues. It may not seem like much but several interruptions a day at 10 minutes a piece can be highly disruptive. How do you tell someone to go away without sounding like you're telling them to take a hike?

NOTE: I work in a cubicle, I no longer have an office with a door.

place a note outside your cubicle telling people not to disturb you from what time to what time.

Just politely tell them that you are too busy to chat right now unless they are talking about something related to the work you are doing at the time. Suggest that you both meet for lunch later if you really want to hear what they have to say.

I admire your tact...I don't know, I would just ignore them, pretend like you don't hear them...haha..., or maybe you could ask if they want to continue talking about the conversation over lunch or something...or say: Meet me at the water cooler in 15 minutes!

When they start talking, sound interested, then ask them if you can catch up with them on that at lunch due to your workload, that way they think you are interested, and you wont hurt their feelings

I have no idea...I have the same problem. I usually try and turn around and do something else, but sometimes that doesn't even help.
