The prefix extra refers to the outside of something. In multicellular organisms there are too many cells to get their undigested food from the environment. They developed a digestive system to make sure the food they ate would be broken down into small enough parts to be absorbed by the cells. The breakfast you ate this morning will be broken down by specific enzymes and grindings of the mouth and stomach to prepare the food for its final digestion in the small intestine. All of this happens outside of the cells. The cells of the small intestine will now absorb these small food particles into the blood stream and send them to all parts of the body. Unicellular organisms like the amoeba will ingest their food and digest it internally or inter cellular.

Extracellular Digestion

If an animal like an amoeba finds some food, it takes the food into itself, like absorbing it directly. This digestion takes place in the cell of the animal: intracellular digestion.

If the animal has a way to digest the food outside the cell and then take in only the nutrition of the food, like a stomach, then each cell does not take in food, only the nutrition from the food: extracellular digestion.

;-D Now I'm hungry! See what you've done. Now I've got to go and extracellular digest!

it refers to the digestion concerned with the higher organims, where their is a seperate tube/system(what ever the case may be) for the break down of the bulk (food).as an example we can take the case of human.Extra cellular digestion does give the exat scenerio of the digestion i.e in order to obtain the energy from food extra cellular digestion hac to be followed by internal digestion........1
