Where, in Montana USA is a nice place to buy a small amount of land and try self sufficency.?

I would like to give self-sufficiency a go before i get too old to mange the work and I have heard Montana is the place. I would like to live within half an hour of thing like hospitals and shops but know nothing about the state or where is a god place to buy and where/what not to buy.

Montana is a beautiful state, but near any cities will be comparable to many other locations in higher costs. Eastern Montana for the most part,,, other than areas such as Billings, are still largely undeveloped, and or farming land. I'd try there, though I found it a bit too desolate, even for me.

GOOD is relative to your budget and opinion. GOOD for me might not be so for you. LAND anywhere is a commodity that cannot be produced, and is often in short supply and high demand in developing areas.

I suggest a site like CraigsList.com to begin a search.

I was in Western M, and found it to be very nice, very rural out of any city area, and close enough to Idaho to be worth exploring.

I have an acquaintance who does this in NW Montana, very near Glacier Park. He and his wife have 20 acres on the North Fork river not far from the Canadian border. Their property adjoins the park on one side, adding to their isolation. They've built themselves a small cabin that suits their needs. They still drive into town (Whitefish) for propane and a few other supplies, but other than that, they're on their own.

Sounds like an adventure to me - and amazingly cold in winter. Best of luck ... enjoy your adventure!
