I'm interested to know how people perceive fat people in today's society. Having been one myself, I tend to view them as lazy and weak-willed (as I was when I was fat). I know we shouldn't care how people look, but it's not just their looks, it's their health that's suffering. Perhaps we find the sight of fat ugly because it's not the way our bodies should be (same goes for skeletal models).

Well done CcC!!!! That's fantastic! Keep it up!

Also, thanks to all of you who have actually bothered to read my question properly.

This is only my OPINION I am not forcing anyone else to share it. I do not treat fat people any differently, and yes, I do understand their problems. I was only asking for a straight answer as to how other people view those of a larger persuasion!!!!

Hang on, i don't think you sounded horrible!!!!

I agree there is nothing more ugly than a fat person eating.

Maybe that sounds mean but its not a conscious decision to feel that way, its just the way you feel.

It is also true that some overweight people are ill and for the sake of this questions let presume we aren't including them

I think if you had a bad self option of your body and associated it with being lazy and week willed than thats probably why you look at other pepole who are over weight and judge them in the same way!!!

I think the key is if you feel and look heathly yourself then when you look at over weight people maybe just sypathise with how horrid they must be feeling to let themselves become over weight and ill.

Who is to say what our bodies should look like. A fat person is still a person, but just more of them. Any thin person who views someone overweight as lazy, should try and walk five miles with a 56lb sack of potatoes. I doubt they would get half a mile, then we could call them lazy! It has been my observation that overweight people are far more friendly and caring for others. You say you were lazy and weak-willed when you were fat, I feel this may have been due to how people saw you, fat and lazy, but I'm sure this was not really the case. Yes, there are fat lazy people out there, but there are many more thin lazy people. Look in the mirror, if you are happy with what you see, and you are in good health, just keep on going. If not, make a plan to alter the way you look, as you have obviously done, and credit to you. Anybody with an overweight problem that is causing concern to their health, should seek professional advice. Fat is not ugly, it is just the person you are, and don't let anyone tell you different.

The sad fact is 'society', as a whole, looks at fat people just like most of the responses here; as lazy, overeating, depressed, no self-control, weak willed, drive-thru addicts, etc. Simply because they do not have the time, the knowledge, the inclination, the compassion, the open-mindedness nor the good old fashioned common sense to comprehend that overweight issues can be caused by more than eating too many Twinkies.
Besides which, we come from a very visual society, everything must be aesthetically pleasing, and uncomplicated for the simple minded and judgmental that make up most of our culture.

My heart goes out to over weight people. I am concerned for their health. Not only physical health but mental health as well. Although you say you were lazy and weak-willed, these are often results of the limits obesity puts on your life. Ordinary activities take so much more effort. If you don't understand this concept put on a 60 pound back pack and live with it for a day or two. Not only will you not want to get up and be active, but your back and legs will begin to hurt. Most obese people have tried diets that don't work or endanger their over-all health. Failure breeds failure and this is considered being weak willed.

Okay,so hully genius has obviously got a bee under the bonnet. You were asking how WE percieve fat people, Not How we percieve your own opinion . It all depends on the person doesnt it, I mean if you see a fat kid ,like I do when I take my son to school, then you look at the parent. It doesnt matter if that kid suffers from a hereditry condition on face value your seeing and judging what is before you . Simiarily, if you see a 22 stone obese person sitting down in maccy dees to three big macs and an extra large coke , then you do look and think my god your gonna die if you carry on. Are they lazy and weak willed or are they eating for comfort ? it doesnt matter. I tend to be more concerned about my own health and appearance , After all those that can be helped ,wether it be fat on medical grounds or fat because of the amount they eat . The helps there, its up to them wether or not they take it .

I am married to a large man, he is not lazy by any means. He is not one to lay around the house. He works nights and on the weekend he will go all day with out eating, so he has got his metabolism all shot to heck. But when he eats he loves to eat. Of course I worry about his health, but he has a physical every year and doesn't have diabetes or high blood pressure. Just because someone is large does not mean they are lazy or weak willed. I have friends that are very active and busy with their children, but they are large. ... I know that we live in a society that judges people by their appearance, but it is so wrong. It just frustrates me so.

Dont think anyone has answered because no1 really cares.

That is a bit harsh of you to call over weight people LAZY and weak willed. You should NEVER judge someone by the way they look. You seem like a very small minded person and considering you used to be over weight you are not very understanding.

I know a few over weight people and they are certainly not lazy or weak willed. Bet you dont have many friends talking the way you do.

Still if we was all as small minded and imature as you the world would be one boring place.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SAGGY SKIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard that being fat is actually quite environmentally friendly as it takes loads of carbon to build a fat reserve. If all fat people got fit, the huge reservoir of stored carbon within the population of the developed world, would be unlocked and released back into the atmosphere. Bad news for the greenhouse effect.

well done. it's encouraging to see an ex-fattie speak out about how bad it is.....

fat people are selfish, self-indulgent and lazy. a lot seem to feel they're victims. you made yourself that way. it's because of you that you're going to die young and can't get a girlfriend. it's because of you that the nhs has to spend loads of money keeping your lard-ar.se alive. they're as bad as smokers. their total nonchalance to how it affects themselves and others is quite disturbing. the only reason you became fat is because you're greedy. you're stuck with it unless you accept that you have to change. i mean, is it so much to ask for that you don't over-eat like a stuffed pig?

and sure, personailty is the most important aspect of a relationship, whatever, looking at a fat person is disgusting and puts me in a melancholy mood. and to be honest being fat only shows that you have a greedy, lazy, weak-willed personality or shows that you have no sense of diginity
