they start really smiling at 3 months and you can tell because they sometimes coo or giggle but they're whole face lights up

My son started really smiling at 3 months. Now he is almost 4 months and he has started giggling if we play with his tummy.
3 months seems to be the age though when a baby really starts to be entertaining. I love how my son is all smiles when he first wakes up in the morning. It melts my heart!

Excellent question, I got on here to ask that same one this morning!! My almost one month old daughter smiled at us several times this morning and it was in direct response to us. She's had gas ones before but these were the first ones in response to playing with us. It's the best moment ever!!

At about one or one and a half months old. They smile from the time they are born and I think that sometimes even those are real smiles.

Expressing voluntary emotion is a complex brain task, as opposed to pain or hurt. Although many adults like to think their child emotionally "connects" with them through facial expressions, such behavior does not fully develop for years.
I suggest you care for your newborn, and love him/her as much as you can. You will always remember these times. The newborn will not, but as a child and adult be etremely grateful.

3-4 months. And when you see one you can totally tell the difference. A real smile is in their eyes too.

It's an evolutionary trait that helps them survive. If they can mimick the others around them they will be accepted into the tribe faster and more likely to stick around. Especially after bighting a breast and pooping all over everything, they need all the help they can get.
