Beware emus bearing sugar!

In another time the idea of neighborhood went beyond locality, it extended to "like minds."

Masonic members will help another Masonic member on the road when they give the sign. Sorority sisters, fraternity brothers, church members, etc. all would extend a helping hand to a person with a "like mind" or kindred spirit.

But would you loan me a cup of sugar if I were not of a "like mind?"

Jesus answered that question when his disciples asked him "Who is my neighbor?" He responded with the story of the Good Samaritan. The point of the story is that stranded man was helped by a person who was not of the same mind, race or religious belief.

Persons in need are our neighbors, regardless to their distance, race or mindset.

"Need" is the defining issue. So, a person may not give another a cup of sugar, but the same person may give the requester a pint of blood if there was need.

If there is a demonstrated need for the cup of sugar to save life or to prevent injury...most people would respond positively.

Certainly. You can keep the sugar, I really don't need it back.

Will you invite me in for tea even though I am not your neighbour?

If you as a complete stranger came to my door and asked for a cup of sugar, yes i would probably give it too you. But since i didn't know you, you would have to wait outside for me to bring it to you. Sorry, can't be too trusting these days,

You don't have to be a neighbor to be neighborly!!!!
