some do it for effect, some do it coz when they sing saliva collects in their cheeks (thats what my brother says, he sings for a local band), but I dont get it - even the green day guy does it a LOT

Because he's a disgusting bastard, just kidding.
Some people do it when they have to yell or to clean their throats..where does he spit? Into the audience? If he does then it's a different story.

he's just trying to look tough. either that or he has mucus in his throat. that makes it kinda hard to sing so he has to spit it out every once in a while HINDER rocks!
