It's Empire Strikes Back. It takes such a u-turn on the adventurously light matinee tone of the first film and drives the series into darker territory with themes off loss, survival and damnation. We are introduced to yoda, who has never been done better since this movie (jedi came close),"I Love You"...."I....know....", the baddies win, the star wars universe is developed and expanded, we meet boba fett, Lando, Luke vs Vader is the most atmospheric "less is more" execution of a fight you'll ever see and then there's THAT REVELATION "Noooooo....I am your Father". You can't beat this movie for great moments like that, not with all the ewoks and pixels Lucas has thrown at the series since. It's no coincidence that this is the measure by which all proceeding Star Wars movies were judged. That's why so many reviewer were using the phrase "The best since Empire!!" when describing Revenge of the Sith.

Revenge of the Sith was the only good movie in the new trilogy. The best Star Wars movie is Empire Strikes Back.

This question is getting so OLD!!! Can't you people come up with an original Star Wars Question.
Yes, Revenge of the Sith was a good film. So were all the original trilogy (eps. 4 - 6, I like them digitally enhanced too).
The best by far is Episode IV: A new Hope

Revenge of the sith is very good, but the best has to be return of the jedi.
And I actually quite liked the phantom menace.

The BEST star wars film?
Gotta be Empire Strikes Back. Lots of great quotes, humour and a great story with a great cliffhanger.
Although I would give Revenge of the Sith a little recognition - if only for that one moment when Darth Vader takes his first breath and is born. The rest of that movie was pretty average.
But ESB has the start of romance, the cloud city, yoda (!!), the last scene between Luke and Vader as well as Han and Leia. Bobba Fett...C3PO being blown up and put together the wrong way round.
'Laugh it up fuzzball!'

OK so they are six films but you know and i know they were done years apart i like to see them as two sets of trilogies .
The 1st three to me are Star wars ,Empire and Return ...
I love Return of the Jedi they have become good friends and Luke is reconciled with his dad and the emperor killed.
out of the other three i agree Revenge of the Sith is cool and definately best of the 3 It was good seeing how Darth was created the storyline was fantastic.

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK wins it for me. Even now I cant work out how the graphics team got around making the rocks levatate in mid air in the Luke and Yoda Dagobah scene. Its a very sleek movie for its time . Loads of great special effects, a great story line and it left you wondering what was to come . Yes Revenge of the Sith was excellant , but they rushed the ending and the birth of Vader scene could have been the jewel in the crown of all six films but instead it seemed to be played down. They could have also given Mace Windu the epic scene that the character deserved . So yes it has to be ESB. Come on guys ,AT-ATs , Snowspeeders , Super Stardestroyers and a hard as nails Vader wanting to kick *** on his one and only son. How can it be beat
