Assuming he plays another 15 years.. AND assuming he starts for another fifteen years.. by year nine or ten, the contract will be a bargain for even an average starting goalie.. at roughly 4-mil a year..

There are several Goalies that are at or near 40 right now that will make 4-mil or more..

What I find surprising is that there appears to be no injury clause in the contract, a 'legal buy out' which to me is the stupid part of the contract, not the amount or length, because DiPietro does have a very good upside, and at worst, should be a tier two Goalie in the make up of a Chris Osgood-type.. solid, won;t lose you games, but won;t win you games either.. and if he excedes that, he's a bargain in five years..

Without an injury or death clause, this contract is foolish.. if those exist, then it's actually a calculated risk that will benefit the team in 7 or 8 years when DiPietro is 'underpaid' compared to other goalies of similar skill and length..

So it seems to me the organization is assuming ALL the risk.. and that's never good business, unless it pays off.. which I highly doubt..

whats wrong with the picture whats wrong is that the NY islanders cant manage a hockey team with all the talent in the world. Dipietro is a good young goalie but he is just not going to do much with the "defence" in front of him. Yes thats y it is so hard to get into a hockey game cuz owners like that drive prices up and make it hard for the avg fan to take in a game or two.

Sure. Loads of athletes are worth more. CEOs, biz guys, **** "Halliburton" Cheney, Bill Gates, etc.

DiPietro's contract is actually low given the market in 15 years' time and will drive salaries down possibly for goalies.

You live in Ottawa. Go to 67's games. Why give the NHL the time of day? Besides who wants to be a Sens fan? It's like being a Cubs' fan...year after year of heartbreak.

I live in Vancouver and used to go to at least a game a month but now I refuse to pay the prices as it's not good value. After all I can watch the WHL cahmpion Van Giants for $18 and sit anywhere down low. I now only go to Nux game swhen they have their monthly half-price sale game or someone gets corporate freebies. Pretty much of the Nux is on TV, good enough.

A player is worth whatever a team chooses to pay him, in my opinion. I think this is an outrageous deal, but I don't blame Dipietro for taking what was on the table.

In the bigger picture of sports salaries, the only way to stop them from being paid is to quit attending games, buying merchandise, and purchasing cable sports channels and packages. I'm not willing to quit any of that, so I guess I just live with the outlandish salaries as part of our capitalist society!

New GM, Same result. This is the same organization that signed Alexei Yashin to a 10 yr contract. That said, this contract is relatively small per year and will have no impact on ticket pricing. Most teams lowered ticket prices during the offseason so you should like into that. The NHL is not saying"take us or leave us" they have put a ceiling on contracts per year and a per team salary cap but not on long-term individual player contracts. In terms of inflation, cost of living, etc.. within three years this could be a bargain.

Gimme a break , this wasn't Snow's doing . As for if he is worth it? Well the 4.whatever it breaks down to will more than likely be a steal at the end of the contract if he is playing well. But , if there are no outs for ownership written into the contract it is insane.

Maybe someone else, but definately not DiPietro. NYI have a pretty messed up front office. It's obviously when your former back-up goalie's the GM.

What is wrong with this picture? The Islanders

This team is a joke!

They look for new and exciting ways to make themselves more of a league laughing stock!

am sorry but i don't now who you are talking about i am but a simple lad from scotland, but i will say this. it is not that if anyone is worth $67 million but you should ask is having this person in the team how much revenue this will generate which could be in excess off $100 million as not one person is bigger that a club, plus what this person will bring to the team
