a snake’s eyes are always open, protected by immobile, transparent scales.
Snake (reptile), legless animal with a long, flexible body covered with overlapping scales. Snakes are reptiles, a diverse group of animals that also includes lizards, turtles, and crocodiles. Snakes are thought to have evolved from lizards and share many characteristics with this group—particularly the so-called legless lizards, which have tiny, almost imperceptible legs. But unlike most lizards, snakes have thin, forked tongues, and they lack external ears. And while most lizards have movable eyelids that periodically close to protect and lubricate the eyes, a snake’s eyes are always open, protected by immobile, transparent scales.

No.They do not have eyelids...that is what seperates the snakes from lizards, especially the glass lizards which are a legless lizard that resembles a snake.Snakes have a modified scale that is clear and protects the eye. When they shed it is shed with the skin and if you look closely you can see it on a shed skin.Sometimes in captivity the humidity is such that an eye scale is retained and gives the snake a silver eye look. This problem can be taken care of using a moist paper towel to rehydrate the eyescale and then scotch tape applied and gently pulled to the rear of the head.It will slough right off. Snakes indeed sleep, they sleep a lot.Usually if a snake has a vertical pupil it will be closed or nearly so whilst sleeping....Z

Snake Girl is correct they essentially have protective lenses over their eyes that are really a snale. You can see them when they shed. Thats the scale where there eye was. Also they are immovable so they cannot blink.

Nope, they have a transparent scale over each eye for protection. When they go into a shed cycle the eyecaps become "milky" and hard to see through. They shed it just like every other scale.

Yes, they are transparent so you cannot see them but they are present. That's the reason you cannot tell the difference b/w snakes who are asleep and snakes who are awake ;-)
