Every political party in Britain that has served three or four consecutive terms of office in government, have ended up being in opposition for a generation, at least. The Liberals ended up being a major opposition party for over 100 years, after their four terms of consecutive government.
New Labour is on it's last legs. My questions are:

1.how long will it be be before we see another Labour Government
in Britain. or
2. Do you think there will never again be a Labour Government?

The political climate when the Liberals were last in power and more recently, when the Conservatives were voted out was very different.

At those times there was a weak and unpopular party in Government and a strong opposition to take it's place. Today there is no strong opposition and if there were a general election tomorrow the party that won would do so with a small majority.

The opinion polls show that neither Labour or the Conservatives have a particularly strong following. Whoever is next in power is going to have to dramatically improve their public standing in order to retain power and the opposition would have to remain weak.

The latest Guardian poll puts the Conservatives on 39%, Labour on 35% and the Lib Dems on 17% - not enough to win a landslide victory and if history is anything to go by then the next Government will be Conservative with Labour back after a single term. Traditionally once a party is in power their popularity begins to falter and the opposition gains popularity. With such a small lead it wouldn;t be long before Labour were once again the people's party of choice.

That premise isn't really true - the Conservative party was in power from 1951 to 1964 - longer than the Labour party currently - and lost to Labour in 1964 but was back in government in 1970.

hopefully there will never ever be another Labour Government, or a Tory one. I would like to see a coalition between the Greens, UKIP and the monster raving loony party, all headed by Billy Connoly as PM.
