Salt is a disinfectant. Also it draws moisture out of the wound. Chloride is in the same family with chlorine (bleach) which explains the burn. Bleach can burn your skin without a wound.

sodium chloride is a salt... of coz it will hurt coz salty stuff hurts on wound and the burning sentation is from the chloride. chloride is sort of a bleech... bleech definally will burn the skin coz it is corrosive.

It's drawing out moisture from the wound,as well as irritating the nerves.
