If you just installed it make sure that the settings are right eg.Hard drive is master and DVD is slave on the same Ide cable.Check in Bios that the settings are OK (eg.secondary ide is enabled/installed etc.).if you use it on the Secondary Ide you could make it a master or a slave but again make sure Ide is enabled best is set it to auto..If you can see the drive in Windows explorer than the only other problem could be the disc itself can not be read do to missing files ( OP system cant read certain files) eg. .mov .mpeg4 etc try a CD if it can read it it is definitely missing files.
Take care!

Download the aspi layer for your os here http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/downloads
Install your drive should then be visable to your progs windows only installs 2 of the 4 files that are needed by the hardware layer this usually corrects the problem for cd/dvd hard drive recognition by the operating system

i think you have to clean the drive because sometimes it will display that your disk is damaged...and wont play those dvds

hmm... it could be a lose cable or something... is it a laptop or a normal desktop PC?

It's really hard to solve without out more info... do the lights come on? is the drive listed in "my computer"? etc, etc...
