Try chanko nabe - this is the hot pot stew that sumo wrestlers make and eat. There are many chanko nabe restaurants (especially around Ryogoku, where sumo events are held in Tokyo) and many of them are run by former sumo wrestlers.
It is traditional Japanese food with a rich broth, lots of vegetables, meat or fish (depends), and you can finish with noodles or rice in the remaining broth.
I love sushi, but I would not recommend cheap sushi for the first time, and not-cheap-sushi can be expensive. If you do try sushi, be careful about going to places without the prices listed. You can easily drop $250/head in those places (or more if you look wealthy.)

Anything from 7/11, I´m serious. Try a cucumber sandwich, anything wrapped in seaweed or some kind of Bento box. When dining in Japan, dine at Seben-Ereben, Iki Bu-Une! 7-11 is number one!
Wash it down with some Suntory Mild Vodka, straight.
Good stuff.
The reason this stuff is so good is because it is:
inexpensive
tasty
convenient
healthy
oftentimes familiar to you already, or a variant on something familiar.
If you do not want to ea tjunk food at 7-11, try any Ramen Shop or, Tenpura (Westerners always like Tenpura) Have fun!

The operative word being "first," right? I know what you mean. If you try something too weird too soon it might turn you off and ruin you for at least a year!
I recommend tempura. Reason--delicious of course. But there are no "weird" ingredients, no strange sea creatures, just one ebi and some vegetables and rice. After that you can work your way up, and a year later you'll be downing natto w the best of them.
I second recommendations for yakiniki. Yum!!! But expensive.
Oh, fast food? Hmm.....Yoshinoya? The atmosphere sucks (unless you are lonely single guy) but the food is cheap and decent. Oh yeah, Coco's Ichiban..........#1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yoshinoya - Beef Bowl
Coco Ichiban - Curry Rice (with cheese)
Tenya - Tempura Bowl
All cheap (under US$10 and all very good)
