I don't think they are cold. In fact they are quite friendly usually, especially if you give a smile first or same good morning to something you will normally get a nice answer back.

Maybe you are mixing up coldness with politeness

I read an explanation of this somewhere. It's because in many countries it is seen as polite to be concerned for the wellbeing (etc.) of those around you. Londoners are reserved and see taking an interest in the affairs of others as sticking their noses in. That may just be the British notiion of politeness.

On the other hand, if you ever try asking for directions or something like that, I think most people are really nice. I think the British notion of politeness says that if anyone wants directions (or to know the time, or to use your lighter) then you have to help.

I know it's not like this everywhere - when I tried to ask some people for directions in New York City they walked right passed me and totally blanked me (I met some really nice New Yorkers too mind). Everyone just has different habits.

I think the London coldness thing is for the most part just reserve. I think people don't speak to each other that much, but there is an unspoken ethos of living and letting live that is quite nice.

I see this is a forum for Britbashing. If London is so cold how come many people from all over the globe live here!

Because it is such a big place, and nobody knows each other so well. I think it is because it is the town that never sleeps. If you go into the more quieter suburbs, you'll find more friendly faces. Church is a good place to start. If you want, you can contact me on: weeroppadc2@yahoo.co.uk and you could meet up with me, I'm a friendly person.

I think they are in the city itself but on the outskirts there are some lovely friendly people, city centres are awful places and very lonely, no one speaks to anyone, they just brush past you and go about their daily life, in a city centre you may as well be a million miles from earth they way your treat by city dwellers.

I think every big city tends to isolate people. I've always found the English to be quite friendly and helpful. They don't invite you around much, though. Because their houses are too small.

beacuse they haven't put their coats on yet? It was probably quite warm when they left for work this morning.

Better take a look in your mirror. If you are interested in people, they will be interested in you.
