A number of references, including "The Guiness Book of World
Records," have cited "It's Tough to Be a Man" as the film with the
most sequels. But after posting my above message yesterday, I
started wondering just what we mean by "sequel." Are film series,
like the James Bond series, sequels to the first movie? Or is there
supposed to be a consistent story thread running through the films?
Doing a little more digging, I learned that William Boyd's Hopalong
Cassidy series of B Westerns contained 66 titles, beginning with
"Hop-Along Cassidy" (the spelling was later changed) in 1935 and
ending with "False Paradise" in 1948 (they must have just kept
cranking them out!). So, I guess you could say that "Hop-Along
Cassidy" beats out "It's Tough to Be a Man" with 65 sequels. (The
Bowery Boys series also includes some 50 titles.)
But what about films where an actor, particularly a comedian, played
a particular character (or character type) in one movie after another?
Could these be considered "sequels"? For example, Charlie Chaplin
played his famous Tramp character in practically every film he ever
made from the short subject "Kid Auto Races at Venice" in 1914 to
the feature "The Great Dictator" in 1940 (exceptions include "Tillie's
Punctured Romance" in 1914 and walk-ons in 1923's "A Woman of
Paris" and 1928's "Show People"), a list of about 80 titles. So, was
every film in which Chaplin played his Tramp character a "sequel" to
"Kid Auto Races"? And there may be even more comedians who
played their own clownish characters in more movies than Chaplin
played his. Would these be sequels as well?
So, I suppose that the answer to "What film has the most sequels,
anyway?" depends on what you mean by "sequel."

Saw this answer on a website
believe James Bond is leading in the big budget circuit, however the actual record goes to the "Amateur hotties," or whatever name it really is, set of movies, which has cranked out AT LEAST 100 sequels probably on the order of several hundred. I can't remember the exact number but think it was either in the 200's or 400's.
(probably a porn film)

A 1969 Japanese film called "It's Tough to Be a Man (Otoko wa tsurai
yo!)" was so successful that it spawned a long-running series of
sequels around its main character, Tora-San. This cycle of movies is
known as the "Tora-San series" for short. 48 Tora-San films were
made between 1969 and 1995, stopping only upon the death of the
series' star, Kiyoshi Atsumi, in 1996.
