It's an optical illision I think, due to its position and the atmosphere/horizon. But I can only find theories on it, looks like the scientists don't know.
Don't think it's closer, the moon is actually moving further away from us each year.

Ah this old chest nut.
What you're seeing is a harvest moon. It is an optical illusion caused by the the full moon being low down in the sky.
Because the light from the moon is passing through more air because of the angle between the observer and the moon, the moon is magnified.
Also because the moon is low you have objects in your field of view (trees buildings etc) that your brain uses to judge the size of the moon. It doesn't do a very good job and so the moon look bigger.
It has nothing at all to do with orbit. The moon's orbit is almost circular.

In all actuality it's nothing more than an optical illusion, the moon is moving further and further away from the earth by about an inch a year

It doesn't. The moon looks bigger when you're closer to it or you're looking at it through a telescope of some kind.
