I totally agree, I've always worked too and get really annoyed with this. My Fiancee and I have studied hard and both got degrees, We've both got very good well paid jobs as an Engineers, we pay all our Taxes, have a mortgage, etc. Yet my friend is a hairdresser with a daughter who only works 16 hours a week, has a massive house paid for by the state, she actually earns more money than me a week! Were is the fairness in that?

I'm on maternity at the moment and was so annoyed with the benefits I'm entitled too, I only get SMP, Family allowance and a Working Tax Credit. The working Tax Credit makes you laugh, it actually tells you how much you could of had if you didn't work, I ended up with a a sixth of what I was entitled too if I hadn't of worked! And if you don't work your child get £500 for their Child Trust Fund were as my daughter only get £250!

The thing is, you can't blame the people who don't work, it's the governments fault, they leave it wide open for abuse. Which is unfair on the genuine people who do need help, and the people who work hard for a living!

For Michael H - You are not Paying my Maternity my company is and I'm still paying my taxes as my Maternity pay is being taxed! Also The Tax Credit and Family allowance is a small fraction of the taxes my Fiancee and I pay each month! And I too don't mind paying for schools, police, etc. But living in an affluent area, our schools don't get much help from the government, the parents and local people have to help with money making events!

I am on benefits and I am far from being a sponger I am 45 years old and have worked hard since leaving school and was happy to do so ! But around 2 years ago I had a brain tumour which now means I can not do my job any more because of my medication which means I can not operate heavy construction equipment any more I had a very well paid and interesting job then over night no more job= no more pay but still the same bills coming in every month all I receive every month is around £250 hardly coining it in by any ones standards so do not generalise about people on benefits I realise some people do take the p*** out of the system only yesterday I got a letter from the benefits people asking me to fill out reams of paper work to make sure I am only getting my entitlement and am not fit to go back too work again they have threatened to stop my money if I don,t get it back to them in a few days I would love to go back to work but my doctor will not sign that I am fit for work so do not catergorise all people on benefit as being spongers! cos some of us are only on benefit by circumstance not desire

Hold on ... you are in for an awakening moment or two.
Sure there are lots of "spongers" out there, claiming for all sorts of State benefits that they may well be unentitled to. BUT....
I get by on an Incapacity benefit of some £80 per week, which these days, does not stretch far enough by half
Ive paid my due, via a 9 percent "NI Contributions" Tax over a goodly number of years, It's all a con. I would have to be around 220 years old to break even.
So I don't "sponge" It is due to me.
Others, I agree, do exploit the system, to the detriment of us honest folks.
Launch a campaign. I will join in.
All the best,
Bob

Great, now imagine your life after the car smash, serious illness, tragic injury at work...etc...etc...we pay national insurance every time we get paid, that is what it is for. I am sure the powers that be are fully aware of the £400 a month that your husband pays her and I am sure that her benefits are adjusted to suit.
I am also sure that she has her reasons why she will not allow him to see the children and if you think she is lazy, it is your head she is damaging and your life she is spoiling.
I would suggest that a lawyer might be the best person to consult regarding access to the child as for the other matters, surely that is her business. We do not know how she is suffering do we ?

yeah I think it all comes down to people being lazy, sure I am on a benefit in New Zealand but my benefit is the sickness benefit and are not allowed to work for 3 months minimum but I get a lot less than that at the same time, roughly 400 pounds works out to be $771.578nzl, and that works out to be a lot as that is all I get for being sick from the government when I used to get that each fortnite not per month,so here is someone that accturally needs more money due to not being able to work and others like her are getting more than me which I paid Tax payers dollars into for about the last 10 years, and then like you say their are people out there getting more than me when the others are perfectly fit to work and people like me cannot and get a lot less. After the 3 months are over I will be back at work, well finding a new one while these other free loaders keep taking our money.

The problem we have is that people get more on benefits that they would in wages, so why should they change. The Government brought in that after 1 year if the had not been for a job interview or even tried to look for a job their Benefits would stop. Unfornyunately this has a flaw, becuase the person goes for a job interview turns up scruffy does not get the job, bobs your uncle one more year on benefits. Its a vicious circle.

Blame the Government and their policy and procedures.

Yes it is a deplorable situation. Sickness benefits for Junkies ( they continue their trade by selling drugs) and Alcoholics. Benefits for being illiterate ( what is wrong with a literacy program and blue collar work. Huge benefits for being a single mum, who has children to 4 different fathers, benefits for surfies, single mum and single dad with kids and the bad back excuse ( although their are genuine one's too)

Then you have:

Partners both getting maintenance from their ex spouses using a bodgey address living together and raking in single parent pensions, benefits for lazy bastards, benefits for ANYONE. But are they happy in life. I think not. Do they have insight? No, they are a group of morons on the same wave length, just like a paedophile, they cannot be educated, cos they think they are so smart, the poor dumb bastards.
To stay on the unemployment benefit, you have to write down positions that you have applied for in the last fortnight. Easy, Get the phone book and write down 6 company names and that is it. Money in the bank.

Just keep ya own ethics, morals and principles and guess what?
NEVER LOWER YA SELF TO THEIR STANDARDS>

You will lead a very rewarding life, you will have a nice car, own your own home, travel overseas. Who gives a **** if it comes out of our taxes, I give up been pissed off about these leeches long ago.

The government is starting to get smarter with these people and hopefully one day in the future, they will get it right and provide whatever interventions that are required to address their needs.

There are some folk who genuinely cannot work or support themselves and would rather earn their own crust that accept hand outs. But what really makes me mad are the people who feign disability through stress/anxiety and think they are clever for doing such!! Also mothers who claim single parent benefits but have a partner and are supprted by them. I know it is no fun living on the bread line, but most of these eejits smoke 40+ fags a day to boot. Thats £70+ a week! I would love to have that to live on after paying my bills and I work full time (or at least pretend to!)

I agree, I've been looking for work since Easter and only getting £57pw. For most of it I wasnt claiming as I felt I would get a job fairly quickly.

I spend as much time as I possibly can looking for work mainly online as Im not going out everday wasting petrol since my car takes about £35-£40 for a full tank. I check the local papers as well. This is not just in my local town of Salisbury, but also towards Southampton, Trowbridge, Bournemouth, Poole.

Problem is the job has to pay enough to justify the travelling. It's very disheartening.

(I only come on YA as a break from looking at jobsites)

This is life, you will always get people who will abuse the system.

Maybe they should be made to spend some time in a 3rd world country that doesn't have a welfare system, then they will know how lucky they are and not abuse the system.

We also have a duty of reporting benefit cheats, as they are robbing those in need, and using the tax we pay wrongly.
