the mouse does not draw power unless the mouse is moved ... cut down on the extraneous movements (trying to "hurry" the computer) and also sub in a few keyboard shortcuts to conserve battery power

How old is this mouse? Could it be getting faulty and using more energy than normal? Also, have you tried different batteries lately to see if maybe there is a problem with the ones you are using? Have you tried NiMH rechargeable batteries? Those generally last longer and are *way* cheaper since you only buy them once and recharge them 1000's of times.

If you try new/different batteries and the problem persists, then I would suggest that you contact the manufacturer and see if this is expected behavior or if there is a problem that they could either fix or replace for you.

However, what about the batteries you're putting in? Did they all come from the same pack or bought at the same time? Are you sure they're good batteries? Also FWIW the batteries that come with it (at least mine came with these -- Energizer Lithium disposables) have rather a lot more energy than normal alkalines. I put a pair into my GBA and it seems to last forever....

You may want to invest in a battery charger and some re-chargeable batteries.
