A few years ago, Venus Williams opened her mouth by saying she could beat anyone ATP ranked male player who wasn't in the top 200. End result, she ate her words.
There isn't any male in ATP rankings that Maria could beat (or any female player for that matter). In fact, most top collegiate male tennis players would be able to beat the top women players.
Hell, my little brother could probably beat some of the top women players. The simple fact is that men hit harder.

Whenever there's discussion of men versus women in tennis, it invariably turns to vague notions of power. The difference between men's and women's tennis at the professional level is rooted in how hard the ball is struck, but not in the way that it is usually presented. Because the women aren't as strong, they can't generate as much pace-- yet that doesn't explain why a female with great defense will still lose. In the men's game that strength and racquet speed is focused into spin. You've heard of the power baseline game. That's all it is, a ton of top spin from the baseline. The women don't hit as hard, so they don't generate as much top spin. And because of this top spin, the boys are able to generate better angles and winners.
A male player in the rankings range of 200-300 isn't the most consistent with pulling off those types of angles and winners. As a result, they'll play pretty much like the girls, except they might serve and move around the court a little faster. Those guys could lose to a top female player. Maybe. Or if they had an "on" day they could crush her 6-1 6-1. Basically, it takes more than hitting the ball fast to beat a top women's player. And all the male pros have what it takes. I just wouldn't think it sure money that the guys ranked over 200 would employ it right. They could definately lose on an off day.

You would have to go well below 200 ranked male player. Men's game is very different. It isn't just power or serve. Top women players can consistently serve over 160kph (100mph) and return high speed serves (as seen in mixed doubles).
Primary difference I think is quickness and swing speed. Men are much quicker at running for balls, changing directions, approaching net, etc. which sets them up for a better shot. Faster swing speed also allow men to hit down the line shots with better pace and quickness.
A lotta women's games are played cross-court. Changing ball direction with pace and quickness is much for difficult for a woman. All these little things will add big in a game situation.

Power, hitting hard , running faster...
All that is just fine, but the thing that makes the top women so good is the fact that they make so few mistakes...
Any male player in the top 100 can hit hard, but if they are really consistant in not making many mistakes, they will have a high ranking. It's a tough guess, but I think Sharapova can beat CERTAIN players in the top 100 men.
Anyone that won't be able to take the pressure and are looking at her legs more then at the ball!!
Then again, does she have a male hitting partner? Find that out and check whether he ever had a ATP ranking and does he beat her when they are playing points in practice??

let me 1st say, im not a sexist. i agree with eprometheus on this one. a professional woman tennis player cannot beat a professional male tennis player. they couldnt beat any male college player, on any of the top juniors. why, bc they cant hit as hard, and run as fast. basically, their just not strong enough. its obvious that jolie doesnt play tennis. if baghdatis were to play sharapova, the score would be 6-0, 6-0. it would take baghdatis no more than 30 min to beat her. and tennisfaf, the reason women tennis player dont make that many mistake is bc they dont hit as hard. thats also why their points last longer. hence the words "hitting partner," he's just hitting with her, he's not going all out. look at michelle wie, she cant even make the cut for a male pga tournament, and thats golf. there will never be a female tennis player that can compete with the men, and dont say "what about billie jean king?" bobby riggs let her win. he bet on her to win bc he would make more money that way, he had a gambling problem. sharapova is not even the #1 female player in the world, but yet she can beat the men, thats funny.

Unfortunately the ranking in the ATP doesn't really justify the capabilitites of the player nowadays because of their injuries...case in point Marat Safin who is rank i think #104 before the US Open...So setting aside the ranking I think Maria would beat clay court specialists like Coria on hard courts, I think with her experience she could beat some of the qualifiers. (I would just like to note how Billy Jean King beat an ATP player to get an equal money prize in the US Open.)

Don't try to compare women pros with men. Men are physically stronger and faster. There is a good reason men do not play against women head to head in singles.

Hands down it has got to be Marcos Baghdatis, he is good but i think that maria is better. She has that power in her swing that she gets from her screaming that would knock him down.
