I work in a school science department, and none of us can decide which category flies should be in. Are they strictly carnivores, or will they eat anything?

It's a bit tricky this one and I think it probably requires further analysis of a fly's life cycle. They probably are omnivores since they will eat anything rotten I believe. The only reservations that I have are: do they eat flesh or is that just maggots? If they spend most of their life as maggots and only a few days as flies, possibly, they don't spend much time eating. Perhaps insects defy categorisation - Dung beetles eat nothing but animal waste (I think), what would that be?

They will eat just about anything liquid or easily liquefied, hoovering up any rubbish, or our food if they can get at it, with their vacuum-shaped proboscis - yuk!
There are thousands of different species of flies. Some eat plants, some eat animals, some eat both.
