Explain why... practically.

Actually, here's a bit of logic to the question...
If you prefer asleep, you'd miss a lot of things that you won't experience while awake.
If you prefer awake, you'd tire yourself and you'd worn out and you won't be able to enjoy the things while awake.
Actually, the more you are awake, the more you'd like to sleep. But the more you are asleep, the more you'd regret when you wake up. : )

It's not a question of preference, but what the body needs? Here's what happens when you sleep at "night".

1. Your immune system goes from active mode to passive, and begins regenerating to prepare for the next day;

2. Your brain sorts and stores all the data you have collected while awake, which equals 10 megabytes a second, times the number of hours awake. That’s about 504 gigabytes for a 14 hour day;

3. Lactic acid is washed out of your muscles and is replaced with oxygen;

4. Repairs are done to cuts, breaks, and muscle strains is accelerated;

5. All growth and development take place.

So, if you don’t mind:

1. Being more sickly as you get older;

2. Losing some or all of what you learned during the previous day;

3. Experience frequent muscles;

4. Heal slower and be open to more infections;

5 Not being as tall as you could have been, having large or firmer breast for females, or having a shorter tally whacker than what it could have possibly been.

Then don’t get 8-10 hours of sleep at night. For day sleepers, you need to be in a completely dark room, that is cool, in order to trick the brain into believing it is night.

If I could choose how much sleep my body needed in order to function well while awake, then I would definitely choose longer hours awake. There aren't enough hours in the day to finish things that need to be done, and this would be a great way to get things done. However, my body tends to require much more sleep than the average person of my age (I usually have to sleep about 9 hours per night to feel rested the next day) and of course I never get that much sleep because then I'd have to go to bed at 9pm every night. In this case, I'd prefer longer hours asleep.

honestly right now with a 5 month old teething son id say asleep it feels like i havent slept in years lol but normally awake because what is the point of life if your sleeping 90% of the time your not going to experience anything if your sleeping or at least anything worth while and well fullfilling your life is easier done awake and not sleeping. so for the majority id say awake but at the present moment id say asleep

I would love longer hours asleep because on my days off of work I still have to get up early and take care of my 3 yr, old. I get enough done during the day to be considered very organised and efficient, but I would love more sleep!

Awake: most days, I don't feel there is enough time in the day to work, children and a little bit of "living". Right now, I work 12-14 hours a day and I generally run out of time...

I think the most important question, you have asked.
This question seems to have not only occurred, but had also been the utmost priority to deal with , for the ancient Masters, who attempted to probe into meaning and purpose of life !
And we are fortunate to have very reliable, easy solutions to handle this alert enjoyable wakeful, maximised waking hours, with good deep rest , minimising the sleep quota !
In India, we have a tool, a 15 minute meditation which has been proved experientially very effective to give a quality of 3 hours of deep sleep, effectively maximising alertness, memory capability, freshness reduction of food , sleep and rest requirement, and yet capability to stay slim, alert, and healthy !

As it stands at the moment, I'd like more sleep. I rise at 4:45am, but don't get to bed early enough to get enough sleep! However, if I didn't feel that way, I'd definitely want more waking hours, 'cause there's not enough hours in the day to get everything done and still have "me" time and sleep!!

it is hard question but also smart... i think i would prefer to sleep more in normal days of working as work makes me tired after more than 12 hours standing on foot, and when i am on vacation, i would prefer to enjoy every second of it awake!!!

a human being needs 6 to 8 hours of sleep per day.if i get 7 to 8 hours of sleep that would be fine. that is quality sleep.then my waking hours will be spent usefully without feeling drowsy. go to bed at 10 & wake up at 6.in the morning. that will keep you healthy wealthy & wise.

Neither-the present balance works just fine.
Sleep when tired, wake when finished sleeping.
