Don't Ask Jack by Neil Gaiman. Spooky little thing.

ETA: Though I *do* have to agree with many that James Joyce's The Dead is possibly the best short story ever written. Best I've read thus far, anyway, and short stories are probably my favorite form of writing.

Anything written by Neil Gaiman

"Greedy Choke Puppy" by Nalo Hopkinson. It was a very unique story that combined SF with Caribbean mythology.

My favorite SS right now is "The Winds" by Eudora Welty. I'm afraid you'd think she was a "classical" author, whatever that means. Try "Penance" by Matthew Crain or "Every night for a thousand years" by Chris Adrian. Those are great stories.

i would suggest 'The Cherry Tree' & 'Snow country Prince' by Dr.Daisaku Ikeda, a peace activist & philosopher of today. his stories are simply wonderful filled with hope & vibrance. they are targeted mainly towards the youth. and yes, they did win many prizes but i can't remember which. Dr.Ikeda himself has won around 189 doctorate degrees frm around the world he's also a great poet. 'Songs of victory'.'Before it is too late'

Read Chris Crutcher. He writes for youth audiences. They're really good stories. ATHLETIC SHORTS is the title of the collection.
