Find a replacement for him, prefably somebody with the looks of Cameron Diaz and the personality of ,er, Cameron Diaz, and the money of, well, you get the point, Cameron Diaz!
There is no way you can't hurt him. But for the best result just make you sure pander to his ego. He is not going to want to hear that you have met somebody that is better looking or more successful than him.
He would rather hear you talk about incompatibility issues. You could start off with, "The sex is absolutely great but....."

There is no possible way to tell him with out hurting him.
Just be sure to allow him his dignity while breaking it off.
Try to be respectful of his feelings and above all break it off in person.
