I'd completely over-haul the systems, and introduce a new points system for offences. Minor crimes (vandalism, graffiti, fraud) would carry 1 point and imprisionment for 3 years. Mid-level crimes (burglary, gbh, assault, stalking) would carry 2 points and imprisionment for 10 years. Major crimes (rape, abduction, murder, manslaughter) would have 3 points and automatic life imprisionment.
Points are with you for life, and when you get 3 points, wether from 3 little crimes or one big one, you'd automatically get life imprisionment. Harsh yes, but I feel it would be fair.

The EU's "Human Rights Act" is the most obscene. I would say most of the laws that this government has created, particularly the nannying ones need removing. They were not needed. We probably had the best legal system in the world, before this bunch came to power.
Another one I take great exception to, is the banning of smoking in Pubs. Why can't it be left to the owners to decide whether they want a smoking/non smoking pub. I don't buy into this passive smoking nonsense at all. When smokers step outside their own homes, there are probably 99.9% of places where they are not allowed to smoke. When a non, or anti smoker steps outside their home, they have a similar percentage of time when they are not in a smoking enviroment. It is drinkers and smokers who have kept pubs in business for many years, so, it is mean, spiteful, vindictive in the extreme, for people who probably don't frequent pubs that often, to try to close down the one place where smoking has been acceptable for centuries.

All these rules, laws, regulations, paperwork and guidelines about childcare. Don't worry I realise that the kids have to be safe and looked after but they also need to be allowed to run about, get hurt or knocked and learn how to get up and fix things, sort things and think for themselves. Also flexibility is a good thing instead of endless paperwork, forward planning sheets etc. Why not just get the kids involved with ideas and write them down in a big book, doing them as and when it is appropriate.
Also I would make a law that brought a huge massive god like hand come out the sky any time that a neighbour let their dog 'poop' in shared garden areas!! The hand would scoop up the neighbour as well as the poo and not let them down until they saw the error of their ways!!

I would allow any registered drug addict to get their supply by normal prescription at the normal prescription price. It would only be an offence to supply people under 18 with drugs and it would not be an offence for people over 18 to have drugs. My reasons for this are basically two. One I don't mind people ruining their lives by taking drugs as long as they don't steal my stuff to pay for it. Two this would take the profit out of dealing in drugs so there would be no motive for the drug barons to smuggle drugs into the country and try to get the kids hooked by giving them drugs at the school gates. We could disband the police drug squads and put the officers onto catching other criminals. This would also reduce the work load for customs officers. the down side is that it would reduce the income for poor farmers in Afghanistan but it would also take the cash away from the Taliban who use drug money to buy arms.
Oh yes and it's a pity we cant get rid of people like Kate Hughes to some remote island.

I should like the old Roman Law brought back where any body retiring from public office was tried in court, if they were good they got a pension if bad put to death or sent into exile. that should make a few politicians sit up and take notice of their citizens. Unfortunately politicians make the law so I think that's why it got taken off the statute books in the first place, except the bit about pensions.

There is a little known law in Ireland which states that deaf people are not entitled to land when their parents die without making a will. Only if they are specifically named in the will, then they can get the land. (The thinking behind this archaic but still legal law... deaf poeple are deemed mentally incompetent)
This is a very silly law, thankfully rarely enforced, but some hearing siblings have tried to wrest land from their deaf siblings using this law.
I would revoke this law, and make ALL people equally entitled to their parent's lands, deaf or not.

I would change the law that lets immigrants come over here and get everything the need without ever working a day in their life.
Bring on the BNP thats what I say.
And no, I'm not being racist. I'm quite happy for people to come over here and live if they are willing to work, and speak our language and respect our country. But not the ones that live off benefits, go around talking amongst themselves in their language and try and change our country by asking that the crosses be taken down because it offends them? What the Hell? I dont find their religions offensive, so why should they find mine? I wouldnt go to their country and be all like " oh yeah you better not celebrate your religion in your schools cos its offensive"
BNP!!!
ADDITION TO MY ORIGINAL COMMENT
This is to Tiffany - the girl who didnt like what i had to say.
Perhaps you didnt read my response correctly. I dont mind people from other countries / cultures moving to this country as long as they are willing to work for a living. And also, if I am willing to be accepting of their religion and beliefs, then why are they protesting that ours is offensive. If they dont like it, then why are they moving here in the first place.
No other country accepts it, we are making Britain a dumping ground for all the immigrants that other countires dont want.
I think you must be the only person in the world that disagrees with what I say.
I would welcome with open arms anyone that comes into this country and plays their part in keeping in running.

I would like the life penalty to be re instated and given to Kate Hughes for the answer she gave in response to your question. I am a white female who has no ties to any of the minority groups she offends in her answer but people like her are the filth of the world and in my mind the only thing bringing this country down. If you don't like being part of such a wonderfully, culturally diverse country then my advice love would be to get out, no one would miss you.

Punishment should be more harsh in line with Middle Eastern countries. I have been to the Middle East several times and there are no yobs on street corners waiting to mug you because if they get caught they will be severly made to pay. We are too soft in the country.

I would not change any of the laws but I would change the punishment. Prison is a school of crime and a waste of tax payers money. I would invest that cash into mental health and other rehabilitaion services to try and mould criminals into upright citizens and assets to our comunnity.
