The match played in 3 sets is a women's match,mens doubles a womens doubles and mixed doubles.
The match played in 5 sets is only a men's match.

in tennis the matches for example from masters series and other tournament are playing with 2 sets and the final is with 3 sets,the matches from wimbledon,us open,roland garos,australian open are playing with 3 sets include the final,and with 5 sets are matches when the score is 2:2 and one of the players have to take the fifth set

the men play best of 5 sets at US, French, Australian & Wimbledon and best of 3 sets at the Super 9 tournaments except the final in Miami, which is best of 5.
the women only play best of 3 sets in all tournaments.

on a lot of tournaments, all matches are played in 3 sets, but on the major tournaments, like the Grand Slam tournaments, men's singles is in 5 sets, all the others in 3
not sure about men's double though...

usually womens tennis is 3 sets and mens are 5 sets!
Not sure why they do this, surely its sexist!!!!!!! lol
