They are very sweet, quiet and interesting to watch. Make sure you have no allergies because they can trigger them.

Guinea pigs take a lot of every day care to keep them healthy. I know, mine are all over 6 years old.

guinea pigs are a good pet for young kids as they are big enough for them to handle but you don't have to take them for walks. Do get a run for your animals though as they love being outside on the grass in the good weather and they make such a funny noise when they are happy.

I do! They're so unique and when they get excited it's funny when they start to hop up. My guinea pig is 6 years old and we give her cardboard toilet paper tubes to play with and she just picks it up and drops it and keeps doing that haha! It's sooo funny! Guinea pigs are soo cute and fun.

i do!i have 3. they are cute and they give you lots of love. They are lil garbage diposels when you buy them veggies. they are even cuter when they have their own lil myspace page. i've been having Guinea Pigs since i was in Elementary school. i tried giving Guinea Pig cold turkey when my last one died like a year ago and i had to have more of them. My sister and me have a piggie each and her piggie was preggers when we got her. so basically it was buy one get one free. we still have the baby her name is lala. now the baby belongs to my niece. she is hooked on piggies now. but all 3 of them live in the cage together. we tried separating them but they cry for each other so we gave up on them being separated.

We have one. So much better than rat/ferret/mice hamster...they don't stink or bite! Plus their poo is basically little pellets which are easy to clean up, unlike a stinky ferret. I would really spend time with the batch you are choosing from. Our little girl piggy is very very timid. I wish we had chosen one that was more outgoing. She basically hides most of the time but will sit with ds on the couch. He loves her.

I owned one for 3 years, but recently gave him to my parents so he could cohabitate with their female. We moved, and didn't want to bring the poor old guy with us. Since my son and I both had school and my husband worked 40-60 hours a week....AND we got a cat....we just didn't have time for him anymore. Guinea pigs need socialization. They're very loving (if raised properly), and don't like being alone too much.

If you're thinking of getting two, make sure they're either the same sex or separated by a divider of some kind. Unless you're thinking of breeding them, of course, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you know what you're doing. And with the same sex cohabitation, sows are easier to keep together than boars. Boars will often fight.

Remember that a guinea pig isn't just a rodent that can be put into a cage and forgotten about. They require just as much care (if not more) than a cat. The cage needs to be cleaned regularly, they need to be kept away from drafts and moist places, their nails need to be trimmed regularly, and they need a good diet. GPs are not able to synthesize vitamin C in their own bodies, so supplements are sometimes necessary (or just a quality GP food with adequate supplementation). You also need to keep track of their teeth to make sure they don't become overgrown. Chewing blocks help prevent this, but don't always do the job adequately. Sometimes a vet filing the teeth down is necessary to keep the GP from starving due to being unable to eat.

Also remember that being social animals, GP's will do better in groups of two of more as opposed to being lone animals.

I would highly suggest that you buy a book on basic guinea pig care before purchasing any of them. I believe everyone should read up on the animal they're thinking of purchasing in order to properly care for it and avoid making fatal mistakes.

If you decide you still want to own GPs, I highly recommend this website;

http://www.cavycages.com

This site shows you how to build your own custom GP cage. We made one for our GP that gave him a lot more room to run around (being able to exercise when THEY want to is very important to their health). We also built one for my parents since they are now housing two pigs. My dad managed to rig up his own divider. If you need any tips on this, feel free to contact me.

And getting them at a young age is best. If you do this, make sure you handle them frequently, and feed them from your hand. This tends to make for a more secure, trusting GP.

And don't be fooled by what some people will tell you about biting habits. It's true that the majority of GPs don't bite very often....but any animal with teeth can and will bite if the mood strikes. My boar got me a couple of times when he didn't particularly like a certain aspect of his grooming (regular brushing is a good idea to keep their skin and coat healthy). He never drew blood, but it did hurt a couple times.

And GPs are not always the best pet for a child. Really, it depends on the age of the child in question....and the temperment. We've always tried to teach our son to handle animals gently and treat them with respect. This didn't stop him from dropping our boar, causing significant injury. We never had x-rays taken, but it was some sort of fracture or bruise on his spine/hip. It took weeks for him to recover. When it first happened, we thought his back was broken (thank God for small miracles).

Good luck!
