According to a newspaper the character of Shrek has been inspired by Hungarians because he is an Ogre and the name of Hungarians derives from anceient Turkish 'onogour'.

the name may derive from a certain word that is used as a common word for a creature such as shrek in the english language. no, shrek is scottish not hungarian.

Mike Myers, the guy who did Shrek's voice, completed the recording in an American accent, but it sounded too normal.
So he redid the whole movie in a Scottish accent (I think he was originally Scottish, or something, or maybe he had relatives)

"Shrek" the film was based on the book by Willian Steig. It is drastically different to the film and much more like Fungus the Bogeyman.

mike myers himself says that the character is Scottish. It's the only good scottish character he's played. other's include the insecurely evil Fat bastard and the crotchety dad in So I married An Awe Murderer.
