Hunter S. Thompson was brilliant. "The Great Shark Hunt" is a collection of articles. His philosophy on eating breakfast was 1) start by being on an employer's expense account in a Four-Star hotel. 2) Order basically everything on the menu. 3) Devote three or four hours to reading several newspapers cover to cover while nibbling on a bit of everything. 4) Do it all naked, preferably outdoors (a private balcony works well).

I tried this once and it was quite enjoyable. I was on an expense account in a Sheraton, ordered enough room service for three, read most of the Washington Post, and for everyone's sake I won't go into the rest but let's just say I was in the privacy of a hotel room.

My favorite story was of him covering the Superbowl in Houston in the early 1970s, not sure what year. He wakes up hung over and asks a bellhop to go to the liquor store for him for a little hair of the dog. Being Sunday in Texas, all liquor stores are closed. Apparently Thompson was some sort of mail-order minister. He calls the hotel manager and says something to the effect of "This is Reverend Thompson in room 123. I'm holding Sunday services here for my small congregation. Would you care to donate the wine to my Sunday worship?" The manger sends up a bottle on the house!

You know, I haven't, but I really should. Just never occurs to me. I'm a big Burroughs fan and they wrote similar stuff--I even have a recording of Burroughs reading a litle poem thing he wrote about how much he liked Thompson.

He co-wrote a song with Warren Zevon that has some curious lyrics. I'll leave you with just the title, as it is quite provocotive all on its own--"You're A Whole Different Person When You're Scared"

i do no longer think of it grew to become into his stories. i think of Thompson grew to become into such an iconic author because of the fact of his variety and content textile. of path in case you have study any of his artwork, you will knowwhat I recommend as quickly as I point out his energetic, loopy writing variety. As for his content textile, he continuously wrote approximately exciting matters on the very fringe of the conventional public eye, issues that united states of america of america grew to become into vaguely conscious of and fascinated by, like the Hell's Angels, the drug way of existence, or in the back of the curtain of the Presidential marketing campaign. Stuff that human beings have been fascinated by, yet weren't user-friendly to interrupt into themselves. additionally, he supposedly invented gonzo journalism, this is to assert he wrote approximately authentic activities yet fictionalized them adequate to cause them to outstanding and extra interesting. the different difficulty that provides to his attraction for me is basically that his character shows by way of plenty in his artwork, and he's this variety of manic speedfreak hedonist which you in user-friendly terms ought to love him and all his (mis)adventures. i'm basically saying, i do no longer think of you will get everywhere with that thesis. you ought to scrap it. My thesis could be some thing like... HST grew to become right into a seminal author because of the fact he acted as a well timed window into the in the back of the curtain underground worldwide of the Nineteen Sixties. The thesis is meant to be built around some thing provable... this is like an define of the full paper. how are you going to jot down an entire paper in case you may no longer even call what you are going to jot down approximately?
