Gravity was invented by 17th century pirates sailing under the flag of an inferiority complex. They got tired of using the weak nuclear force to cook their fish so decided to try something new. Isaac Hayes and Olivia Newton was discudding the pros and cons of the standard model which was pointless as the sonic the hedghog made it law that Heidi Klum was the standard. So they came up with a new plan, Gravity would be used to cook their fish from now on. Heidi Klum likes fish. They all lived happily ever after.

As everyone has mentioned, gravity was discovered by Isaac Newton. Before Newton, everything floated in mid-air, and livestock had to be tethered in their fields or they would float away into space.
Fortunately, Newton discovered gravity and everything plunked down onto Earth and it became possible to keep beer in glasses without it drifting away (that's why German beer steins had those little caps on them - they retained the caps out of a sense of tradition even when Newton's gravity came into effect).
Today, there is considerable pressure to repeal gravity in order to make it easier to launch satellites so people can watch Access Hollywood 24 hours a day like God intended.
Another lobby wants to lower the gravity from 9.8 meters per second to a more reasonable 5.5 meters per second. This would reduce fuel consumption worldwide, and make basketball more exciting, but would still keep most of the livestock on the ground.
Either that or gravity is a physical property of the universe that has been in effect since Creation/Big Bang, and Newton was merely someone who managed to formulate a workable and testable hypothesis that modeled how the observable phenomenon of gravity worked. A model that has (more or less) stood up to scientific scrutiny, although it has certainly been modified and revised over the years.
Interestingly enough, there is actually less physical evidence supporting the theory of gravity than there is for the theory of evolution, and yet no one ever talks about teaching 'intelligent falling' in classrooms.

There was this guy in England sitting under an apple tree, and an apple fell on his head. The doctor said "Mr Newton if that apple would have been a watermelon you would be in GRAVE shape". Thus the law of gravity was discovered and is measured in Newtons, wouldn't you just know that!

The first person to discover gravity was the first caveman who dropped a rock on his foot. However it was a long time later that Sir Issac Newton formulated the laws by which we now understand it.
