Its your subconscious partying with your imagination, helping to create the weird dreams.
But it does sound like a struggle. Have you got a situation in your life where you are trying hard to maybe achieve a goal or overcome an issue, but perhaps not on your terms, or in unfamiliar surroundings (like starting college or a new job, etc)? If that is the case, then it may be reflected in the subject of your dreams in this weird way you are experiencing.

Dreams are your brains way of dealing with everyday issues that your conscious mind can't handle. I probably means that there is a struggle in some part of your life that you need to do something about and you are either ignoring it or fighting against it. Take a good look at things and make some decisions.

I dunno if I believe this entirely but maybe its true. I heard that people or things in your dreams represent a part of you.
So just maybe you are fighting yourself on some issue these days and "losing someone close to you" may mean you are losing an old part of yourself because you recently went through change or spiritual growth period. Backgrounds: maybe indigestion.

Could be a combination of several things, something dwelling in your subconscious, something you ate, something you saw, either in the past or recently.
All mixed together in your mind & coming out in you dreams.
Hope this helps.
