I was wondering if a pregnant mother could feel the fetal heartbeat. If they can, what does if feel like to the mother and when in the pregnacy do you start to feel it?

yes, I did feel the baby's heartbeat (all four of my kids) when my tummy was bigger approximately around 6-8 months.

but I was enjoying the baby more when they were having hiccups!

I can honestly say I never felt the baby's heartbeat with any of my three kids. However, I did feel it when each of them got the hiccups. And of course, they were all so active, my ribs got sore from all their kicking. :-) But I always enjoyed going to the doctor and hearing the heartbeat when they checked it. You can even buy kits to listen to the baby's heartbeat at home. Which while isn't necessary, is sometimes a really reassuring thing and great for involving the Dad as well. Good luck.

No hon..can't feel it. The baby is too encased in a sac full of water. The doctor can hear it around 12wks on a doppler stethoscope but not with a normal stethoscope.
