She was the token smurf. Only some of the male smurfs liked having her there. The rest of the smurfs had each other if you catch my meaning.

If I remember correctly, they were all created from an experiment, not born, but then that leaves the question of where did Baby Smurf come from, not Smurfette. Go figure!

actually, there were 2: Smurfette was originally created by Gargamel in attempt to lure the rest of them and Sassette was an invention of the original "de-aged" Smurflings (courtesy of Father Time) to be a sister to Smurfette
