Trust me... there are millions of people that have been in your situation before. I just sat down and had a talk to the guy. I explained that I didn't see him like that. He was just a mate and all that goes with it. I told him that it was up to him if he still wanted to be friends, that I didn't want to lose his friendship but I could olny stay friends with him if he really understood that we could never be more than friends. He took it well. A little heart broken. But we are still best mates to this day and after long enough he even gave me his permission to date when of his good mates. The trick is not to sugar coat it too much otherwise they just don't get the idea. Good luck!!

just tell him frankly. he loves you so much so no matter where you look at it, you will really hurt him by what you have to say. no matter how hard you try to say it nicely still he will be hurt. however, since he loves you so much as you claim i believe he can understand. if you really don't want to hurt him, you have to tell him the truth as soon as possible. only your honesty can make him feel better
