This is probably best addressed to some branding/marketing person. But I am curious as to what people think of this phenomenon.

Even I haven't been able to come up with a satisfactory answer for the somewhat cryptic naming convention used for mobile phones.

Having been involved in some product naming exercises, here
is my personal theory (I work in Product Mgmt for an Internet company, so related field).

The advantages of having a number system are:
1) For a product line that is expected to keep on growing, having a number system is much more scalable so you can keep on adding new products without having to re-invent a name each time.
2) For a global company, its much easier to "translate" numbers then try to find a name that works in each of the XX markets you need to sell the product.
3) A number scheme like Nokia's or BMW or Mercedes (the 3-series, the 5-series) allow easy communication of the product positioning (3 is for economy, 5 is for luxury, etc.)
4) If you've ever been involved in a "naming" exercise at a huge corporation, you'll know how much of a pain it is. There are so many stakeholders, and EVERYONE has an opinion about a name. There is also a lot of risk involved in naming (Pinto is still synonymous with fatal auto mechanical failure) that might get associated negatively.

So these are the reasons (I think) are why some of these companies use numbers instead of names.

Because mobile phone models are so many and its changes for improvement are very fastSo it is easier if put number on its model.Cars, bikes and wathches have no so many models and its changes usually only once a year.
