Yes, of course. Almost all the nationalized banks and top private banks sell pure gold. You will get 24 Karat gold only. For ornament gold you need to go jewellery shops. How ever you can convert Pure gold (24 Karat) to Ornament gold in any good jewellery shop.

I think you used to be able to when the dollar was actually backed by gold and worth something.
Now the money is printed on a whim by Greenspan when he simply wants to fork a few million or so over to his friends each weekend.
