The Treo was originally Handspring's smart phone. Palm founder Jeff Hawkins & executive Donna Dubinski formed Handspring in 1998. Sales of the Treo began in 2002 and was initially offered with Sprint service. In June of 2003 Palm announced its aquisition of Handspring and plans to merge the product lines in the face of failing profits on both sides. Palm then began marketing the smart phone as the PalmOne (later just Palm) Treo.
As to popularity, consumer comparison sites list the Treo above the RIM Blackberry.

Sort of, by sub-brand you meant product line? Then the word is definite yes.
It was started by HandSpring, the company HS was absorbed by Palm; Treo was popular and still quite is at Palm's hand.
The relationship between HandSpring and Palm is like relationship between NeXTStep and Apple. HS was founded by outgoing Palm ex-CEO and created Treo before being absorbed back to Palm; samething happens with NS and Apple with a product called Cube.
