This is what I do:
1.) I go through the Add & Remove Programs section in Control Panel. I remove anything that I do not need anymore. You need to be realistic with yourself if this menu is cluttered, keep what you need, pitch what you dont. After that I would delete any folders left over in Program Files and shortcuts from the Desktop.
2.) I would reccomend that you ditch your p2p software, Im going to take a wild guess at you having one. Use torrents and if you could, keep them on a seperate hard-drive or archive them with DVD's CD's. Try not to keep them on your computer.
3.) Get the a Registry cleaning program from http://www.download.com to clean out your registry of files that you do not need anymore, especially since you just uninstalled software. I would also run a program called CCleaner to do further tidy up jobs.
4.) Get the program called NoAdware and Avast from Download.com. You can get the full version serial keys from www.serials.ws (Always run any scanning program in Safe Mode)
5.) Remove as many shortcuts from your desktop as possible. The fewer shortcuts the less it has to process. If you have a cluttered HDD with things that could be stored on DVD's or CD's then do so!
6.) Run your defrag program
As for physical clean up use this guide to help you out

Do all of this on a monthly basis, should speed things up a bit for you at no cost! Good luck

Don't try to run more than three programs simultaneously as this will slow done your computer. You can also check if your notebook is performing any scanning while you are working with it, sometime it can be ruining Antivirus without any notice or screen popping up. You can always check by closing all your programs that you are currently working on and after a few seconds later try to observe your HDD light if it is still blinking, if so that mean your hard disk is run perhaps there is some other program running.
And if you are working with graphics, yes, laptop performance will definitely be affected.
GOOD LUCK!

I can tell you your problem right now. It is a Vista. They are horrible I had one. You can Not download that many programs onto the computer or it will start going even slower. So delete some of the stuff that you have downloaded. Also you can take it back to windows and say it isn't to your likeing and you want to give it back and that you want another computer. You can also get your money back for false advertising. They say it runs great but it really doesn't. But you will need to take all your music off so your comp can run faster.

From the Start menu click "run" and type "msconfig", look at the programmes that opened on startup and if you don't need them (they can always be started later with a click of the mouse on the programme you want) untick them and resart your machine.
Remember to leave any anti-virus and firewall running.
You could also try de-fragging in safe mode as Windows can have trouble doing a proper defrag when applications or system services are running. On re-booting just tap F8 and choose "Safe Mode"
Also check if you are using "Firefox" to clean your History and Cache using their tools and make sure that your email trash and junk folders are empty.

There can be many reasons for your problems but just check if you have programs running in the background-especially if you have an AV(anti virus). Also just try cleaning out your registry(you can find plenty of these programs on the net). If all else fails then formatting your drive could be helpful.

One thing too i would do, just to be on the safe side, would BACKUP everything first, run a Ghost Image on it, then reformat. This way, if something should happen, you wont lose it all.
Also, check the fragmentation of your drive. This will lead into problems as well.

well, one thing that laptops intend to do after a while is.... overheating. yes dust and dirt block the heat sink of your laptop, blocks the airflow and your fan can't cool down the CPU very well..and if it detects overheating, Windows will stop-clock throttle the CPU right down to crawling pace in order to try and reduce heat output.
so find a way to open up your laptop and clean the heat sink. if you can't do it and never done it, i strongly recommend it, to let a friend whose done it before do it for you.

A recovery would probably help you a lot.. There is always some files etc.. that will not be removed when you uninstall / delete..
What I did to speed up mine, was to replace the harddrive.. The one included was a 5400 rpm disk.. The new one is a 7200 rpm and it improved alot..
