Here's the one that immediately came to mind...

Several years ago, I was playing the role of Iago with a national touring company. We played a show in Edinboro, PA, which just happened to be the hometown of the actor playing Othello. For whatever reason, that evening's performance was just magical. From the opening scene, I could sense that something VERY much out of the ordinary was happening. Every time I went out on stage, I seemed to be hearing, seeing, and FEELING with greater clarity than ever before.

I'm not normally a reclusive actor backstage during performance, but, that evening, I didn't want to talk to anyone from the "real world;" I just wanted to ride the wave.

We performed "Othello" over 100 times during the tour, but I don't think we ever equalled our performance that night in Edinboro.

After the show, I sat in a dressing room backstage with the actor who played Othello. We were both drenched in sweat, and absolutely EXHAUSTED. We talked about the show, and agreed that we had just been part of something very special. We also agreed that it was probably a good thing that it didn't happen every night...it would have KILLED us.

The best theatrical experience that I had has to be my first school play: Miss Saigon. It was my very first time to play a lead role in a musical. We even won some awards because the play is not just something that we have presented but it is also a competition. I won the 'Best Actress' award too. Everything was so incredible when I'm up the stage and performing!

When I look back on the 3 days that we're perfoming, I just smile. I really wish that I can turn back time and do it again.

The opening performances of Phantom of the Opera in New York, with the original cast (Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman) was sheer theatrical MAGIC: The audience was spellbound, and the beauty of the scenery and music just took you to another world. Let the critics laugh and carp, but it was breathtaking. The result is that it's the longest running musical in history and still selling out.

My husband and I played Jessie Mae & Ludie Watts in Trip To Bountiful. Jessie Mae is very loud, overbearing and controlling through the entire show. She completely dominates her husband Ludie, and he lets her. At the end of the show, he finally stands up to her and gets the upper hand if only for a moment. One night, the audience went so crazy with clapping and cheering at the fact that she was finally told off, we had to hold for several seconds. It was an unbelievable response! We went to a sports bar afterward and were amazed when the bar crowd starting cheering at a hockey game - it sounded just like what we had gone through onstage. Awesome.

When I was 18 I went to LaMaMa theater in NYC to see experimental theater. I saw the play The architect and the Emperor of Abyssinia. I also went to Broadway to see Pacific Overtures. That was in 1976. I decided, against my parent's wishes, that I wanted to study drama, (not to be an actress, but to be a playwright.)I have seen many, many plays in a 30 yr period, and i also have worked in several productions.
But as a drama teacher the plays that make me remember why I love theater are performed by my elementary school students. They are so pure and intent on what they are doing that it moves me all the time. They only want to perform for the love of being in a play. Children are the best artists.

Watching The Lion King at London's Lyceum Theatre last year on the 8th July, before the performance started an announcement was made "We'd like to decided this performance to everyone who lost their lives in the terrible attacks on London yesterday." I was almost in tears before the show even started! And watching how they made that whole scene come to life was absolutely magical.

My grandparents used to take me to the theatre when I was little. In '78 or '79 (I would have been 9 or 10) they took me to the London Palladium to see 'The King and I'. Yul Brynner and Virginia McKenna - he was so powerful on stage that I was mesmerised, and although it was many years ago I can remember quite clearly how spellbound I was. At the end when he died, and the stage was in darkness and he was lying on his bed, I truly believed for one moment that he was really dead. I have loved the theatre ever since.

Seeing the Cirque du Soleil at the Trafford Centre a few years ago - my husband said my mouth was hanging open during the entire performance. If I'd have known it existed when I was 15 I'd have run away to join it. Absolutely stunning!
