"We ask the Pope to apologise to the Muslim nation for insulting its religion, its Prophet and its beliefs."

Why does he have to apologise? just because his opinion is not shared in the muslim world why should he apologise? I am sick and tired of this pussyfooting around Islam. If the leader of the catholic church wants to express his opinion he is free to do so, all we seem to hear about are muslim opinions.

Melek - The pope has a responsibility to the catholic church not to Islam, and as for the tolerance you mention does that not apply to muslims because i think you will find they are the most untolarent and backward.

Khalid - I think recent events show who preaches hatred and the pope is not one of them.

Any chance of an apology from mohammeds' representative on earth for all the terrorist activity from muslims?..: you know, the murders, the atrocitys, the holding countries to blackmail, the barbaric practise of cutting heads off peaceworkers,,etc, etc, etc...?
When are we, Christians, going to see some sort of apology?

Hyper-sensitivity is ruining rational thought and debate. The pope should not have to apologise for quoting the remarks of someone else in an appropriate context.

This reminds me of the hysteria caused by Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses" in 1988. Nearly all of the "enraged" Muslims baying for Rushdie's blood had not even read the book!

A clever fellow put it very succintly:

It seems that Salman's death is worth
Some Imam's million dollars
I know that Salman's mind is worth
A million Ayatollahs

If Muslims want to be taken seriously they need to grow up!

I didn't hear the pope's comments but I heard on the radio this morning driving into work that some big wig mullah is demanding an apology.
Isn't it so typical and so ironic. It's ok for the president of an Islamic republic nation to call for destruction of Israel. It's ok for muslim leaders to preach that all nonislamics are infidels and must be destroyed - jihad. It's ok for them to burn christian churches, behead innocent civilians, basically carry on like barbarians. But then let anyone say anything they interpret as anti muslim and look out. The wrath of allah be upon you. It's time we stopped being so damned politically correct and call a spade a spade.

There are people who wish to be offended. They will take offense where none is intended because they perceive an insult. It is nonsense to say that Muslims haven't done anything to Christians. They bombed the twin towers. Someone posted the question about Hitler being a Christian, so in the same vein, Bin Laden is a Muslim. Whether you like it or not.

As the head of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt said.... the Pope's words "do not express correct understanding of Islam and are merely wrong and distorted beliefs being repeated in the West".

This is not about the Pope's "opinion" plain and simple. This is about his lack of understanding the core beliefs of Islam. He is the head of the Catholic Church, he has a responsiblity to the followers of this religion to be fair and just.

As for pussyfooting around Islam.....what the heck is that supposed to mean? Please try to educate yourself, knowledge is power and this world would be a much more better place to live if there was more knowledge and most importantly TOLERANCE. :)

Peace be with you.

When these so called Muslim leaders accept responsibility for the actions of their flock including the terrorists who they publicly condemn, but seem to accept as fully fledged Muslims, then they can question our Holy Father instead they try'n deny the exsistance of terror in their shifty communities, blaming everyone except their braindead, brainwashed robotic followers, they should put up or fcuk off back to the desserts they crawled out of. .these people are fanatical and have to be kept in check. . the Vatican was wrong to bend to these sleeping terrorists demands for an apology . ...God bless the Pope. ..amen.

They are using a well tried tactic, 'being offended'. It has worked so far. Who specifically, is offended in the Muslim world? Does somebody speak for the whole Muslim population, even though they are spread all over the world? If so, what chance Multiculturalism?

His reference to a reading of many years ago should not be taken as His personal statement, therefore NO apology should be made.

However the statement does ring true today, as it appears to fanatical Muslims that one should either belong to their religion or face their wrath.

It also appears that there are Muslims out there who are constantly searching for any excuse to force their views on the rest of society.

i dont believe he should apoligise for 2 reasons 1 he wasnt making a statement he was only repeting a quote . and even if he did make a statement it was only aimed at getting a point across that most people truely believe in including the majority of the muslim nation he was trying to get across that its wrong to go about enforcing your religious beliefs opon others through threats or force
