I would prefer some alternative to a cruise ship. Perhaps a fishing boat or cargo. Any alternative by sea so long it's not tourist!! Planning this trip in May 2007.

There are ferries that go up the inside passage from Bellingham (1.5 hours north of Seattle). Most fishing boats or cargo ships would have to be a private arrangement. They are business-related and you'd have to get permission from the business owners to ride with them. In all likelihood, they would not take you, as you would be considered a liability. In other words, if anything were to happen to you, they could get sued.

I looked into this once and all I was able to find was an Alaska ferry from Prince Rupert in Canada. I also found out that the ferry would cost just about as much as a cruise ship, so I opted for the cruise figuring if I was going to pay that much, I might as well really enjoy myself.

In the Yellow-pages? At he port in Seattle? Have you considered "hitch-hiking" or is it "boat-hitching" ?
